OC Transpo buses cover the full city. The NCC cycling path network (600km; free; the most extensive maintained urban cycling path in Canada; the Ottawa River Pathway and the Rideau Canal pathway are the two most used by visitors) is best accessed with a Bika or Rentabike rental (C$15–25/day). Uber is available and affordable throughout Ottawa (C$10–20 for most central journeys).
Jun–Sep (20–28°C; Canada Day July 1; the ByWard Market at peak) and Feb (Winterlude; Rideau Canal skating; the world’s largest natural ice rink) are the two defining seasons. May and Sep are the quietest and best-value periods.
Ottawa is the most affordable major capital in Canada: 20–30% cheaper than Toronto or Vancouver. The national museums are world-class and reasonably priced. Canada Day (July 1) inflates accommodation significantly. Per person per day.

The National Gallery of Canada (free Thursdays 5–8pm) houses the world’s finest Group of Seven collection. Start on the third floor and work down.
Winterlude (three February weekends) features the Canal skating, ice sculptures on Confederation Park, and the Snowflake Kingdom family area. All free.
BeaverTails (fried dough pastries) at the original 69 George Street kiosk in the Byward Market cost $7–9. The original cinnamon-sugar is the essential order.
The Ottawa River Pathway runs 7.5km from the National War Memorial to Britannia Park. Rental bikes from Escape Bike Shop cost $30/day. Best on a Tuesday.
