Quebec City, the capital of the province of Quebec, was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. Its old town, the only fortified city in North America north of Mexico whose walls still survive, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1985).

The Upper Town on the cliff is crowned by the Château Frontenac hotel; the Lower Town by the river has narrow streets and stone houses. French is spoken almost everywhere.

Eating & Drinking

Try tourtière (meat pie), poutine, maple taffy on snow, pea soup and Quebec cheeses.

Rue Saint-Jean and the Saint-Roch district have good restaurants and microbreweries.

Getting There & Around

Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB) is about 20 minutes from the old town by taxi. VIA Rail trains from Montreal take about three and a half hours. The old town is best explored on foot.

Most visa-exempt visitors flying to Canada, including EU, UK and Australian citizens, need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which costs CAN$7 online. US citizens need only a valid passport. Some nationalities need a visitor visa instead. Check current rules before you travel.
