The TransLink Compass Card (available at all SkyTrain stations and the airport; C$3.15/ride or C$11/day; covers SkyTrain, bus and SeaBus) is the core transit. The Canada Line SkyTrain (from YVR Airport to Waterfront Station: 25 min; C$4.65; or to Richmond for dim sum: 25 min; C$3.15) is the most useful route. The Aquabus and False Creek Ferries (èC$4/crossing; connecting Granville Island, Science World and the downtown waterfront) are the most scenic. The Stanley Park Seawall (free; 22km; cycle or walk) is the most pleasurable. Uber is widely available (C$10–25 for most city journeys).
Jun–Sep is the driest and warmest time (18–24°C; the mountains clear; the sea kayaking and cycling season at peak). Dec–Mar is ski season (Whistler 2h north; Grouse Mountain 30 min). Nov–May is the rainy season; come prepared.
Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in Canada for accommodation; food ranges from cheap Asian options to upscale Pacific Northwest cuisine. The Canada Line to the airport (C$4.65) is excellent value. Per person per day.
Stanley Park (free to walk the Seawall), Granville Island (free entry; market browsing), Gastown cobblestone streets (free) and Kitsilano Beach (free) make Vancouver very accessible on a tight budget.

The 10km Stanley Park Seawall cycle route takes 45 minutes at an easy pace. Rent bikes from Spokes (1798 W Georgia; $8/hour). Best before 9am.
The Richmond Night Market (May–October; Fri–Sun) is the largest in North America. The food stalls are overwhelmingly Asian. $6 entry; food from $3.
The Grouse Mountain gondola (30 minutes from downtown; $69) reaches 1,231m with views over Vancouver. The Grind trail hike up is free and takes 1.5 hours.
BC spot prawns are fished for 6 weeks in May–June only. Buy them live at Fisherman’s Wharf on False Creek. The season ends abruptly — don’t miss it.
Whistler (2 hours north by Sea-to-Sky Highway or bus; $35) is the finest mountain resort in North America. Day ski passes from $130 in peak season.
The BC Ferries Swartz Bay crossing from Tsawwassen to Victoria (1h35m; from $18) is the finest way in. Whale watching tours run May–October from Victoria harbour.
