The Vltava River wraps around Český Krumlov on three sides in a 270° horseshoe — the tightest meander of the river’s entire 432km length. The finest view of the horseshoe is from the castle gardens terrace. The Vltava canoe circuit (Kč 500–800; 2h) passes through the horseshoe at water level.

The Český Krumlov historic centre (UNESCO World Heritage since 1992) has 300 medieval buildings in continuous use since the 15th century — the Svornosti main square with the plague column, the 16th-century town hall, and the Gothic-Baroque Church of St Vitus with the finest carved pulpit in southern Bohemia.
💡 A Vltava canoe trip through the horseshoe (Kč 500–800; 2h; the canoe ramp 200m south of the bridge) gives the finest view of the castle from the river — the cliff face and the castle tower from water level.
The Baroque Theatre in the Český Krumlov Castle (the best-preserved Baroque theatre in Europe; built 1680–1690; original stage machinery intact; Tour 2 Kč 240) uses the original counterweight fly system, the wing-and-shutter perspective backdrops, and the gas-light system. The Castle Gardens (free) extend behind the castle with Baroque fountains and the revolving auditorium.

The Český Krumlov restaurant scene is small but concentrated and significantly better value than Prague: the traditional Czech restaurant in the old town (the svíčková, the pork knuckle, the gouláš with the bread dumpling; Kč 250–400 pp at any old town hospoda), the Nonna Gina restaurant (the Italian-owned pizzeria in the old town; Kč 180–280 for a pizza; the most consistently reliable non-Czech meal in Český Krumlov), the Na Louzi restaurant (the traditional Czech hospoda; the most authentic service in the town; the svíčková consistently rated the best in South Bohemia; Kč 250–350 pp), and the castle courtyard café (the second courtyard café for the coffee and the apricot štrúdl between the castle tour stages) cover the complete Český Krumlov food experience. The South Bohemian wine (the Budvar Budweiser from the brewery 25km north — the most specifically regional beer; Kč 50–65 per 0.5L on draft) is the drink.
The entire historic core of Český Krumlov (the area within the Vltava horseshoe; less than 1 km²) is a pedestrian zone entirely walkable in 15 minutes end to end. The castle hill (the steep ramp from the Latran street to the first castle gate; or the castle lift — the funicular lift Kč 30 from the gate to the castle gardens; the most practical for those with mobility limitations). The Vltava canoe (the Malekon canoe hire from the old town river bank; Kč 300–500/hour; the most enjoyable summer activity). The surrounding region requires a car or a taxi (the Czech Budějovice brewery, the Austrian border, the South Bohemian cycling trails).

The Egon Schiele Art Centrum (Široká 71; 200 CZK; Tue–Sun) has the finest collection of Schiele works outside Vienna, plus Austrian Expressionist contemporaries. The former brewery setting is beautiful.

May–Jun and Sep–Oct are ideal (castle open; manageable crowds; best light). Jul–Aug: the Baroque Festival but overwhelmingly crowded — stay overnight. Dec: the quietest and most affordable; the snow on the castle tower is magical.

💡 Český Krumlov is best as 2 nights — the day-tripper crowds from Prague arrive at 10am and leave at 6pm; staying the night gives you the town before 9am and after 6pm when it genuinely belongs to itself.

💡 The Student Agency bus from Prague (3h; Kč 180–220; departs Prague Florenc bus station; book at bustickets.eu) is faster and more scenic than the train, which requires a connection at České Budějovice.
Český Krumlov is cheaper than Prague. The castle Tour 1 (Kč 280) and Tour 2 Baroque Theatre (Kč 380) are the main entry costs. Food and accommodation are significantly lower than Prague. Per person per day.
