Olomouc is the finest hidden city in the Czech Republic — a Baroque university city of 100,000 in northern Moravia with the finest collection of Baroque fountains in Central Europe (six in the historic centre alone), the UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column (the largest Baroque plague column in Central Europe), and the most atmospheric provincial Czech capital that most visitors to Prague never reach.

The Olomouc Astronomical Clock (the finest Gothic clock in Moravia; destroyed by the Nazis in 1945 and rebuilt in 1955 in Socialist Realist style with workers and proletarians instead of saints — a unique communist-era astronomical clock) performs at noon. The Olomňoucké tvařůžky (Tvářůžky; the pungent fermented soft cheese produced since the 15th century; the strongest regionally protected Czech food) is the defining Olomouc food product.

Top Sights in Olomouc

The Holy Trinity Column & the Upper Square

The Holy Trinity Column (Sloup Nejsvětější Trojice; UNESCO; 1716–1754; 35m; the Upper Square) is the largest Baroque plague column in Central Europe — an 18-saint chapel with the Trinity in gilded bronze above, forming a 35m monument to the plague that killed a third of Olomouc’s population in 1715. The carved saints (1716–1754) are the finest Baroque sculpture group in Moravia.

💡 The Holy Trinity Column (UNESCO; free to stand below; the chapel key from the town hall) is most dramatic at noon when the gilded Trinity crown is at its most vivid — the largest Baroque plague column in Central Europe.

The Six Baroque Fountains

Olomouc’s six Baroque fountains (Hercules, Caesar, Neptune, Jupiter, Mercury, Triton; built 1683–1725; the finest civic Baroque fountain ensemble in Central Europe; a 7th Arion fountain was added in 2002) are all within 1km of each other in the historic centre. The Caesar Fountain (1725; the Lower Square) is the finest — the Roman emperor on horseback above the fish and the water jets from the horse’s hooves.

💡 The six Baroque fountains (all within 1km; all free; the finest Baroque civic fountain ensemble in Central Europe) are best walked as a circuit from the Upper Square — the Caesar Fountain in the Lower Square is the finest.

Wenceslas Cathedral & the Astronomical Clock

The Cathedral of Wenceslas (Katedrála Svatého Václava; the archdiocese cathedral of Moravia; the finest Romanesque crypt in Moravia; Kč 0 entry) and the Olomouc Astronomical Clock on the Town Hall (the unique 1955 Socialist Realist rebuild; workers and athletes instead of saints) are the two most architecturally significant objects in the city — separated by 300m in the historic centre.

💡 The Olomouc Astronomical Clock (the Town Hall north facade; performs at noon; the 1955 Socialist Realist rebuild with workers instead of saints) is the most ideologically unique astronomical clock in the world.

The Tvarůžky Cheese & the Student City

Olomňoucké tvařůžky (the pungent fermented soft cheese; EU protected geographical indication; made in Loštice since the 15th century; Kč 30–50 per 100g) is the most specifically Olomouc food product. Palacký University (25,000 students; founded 1573; the second-oldest university in the Czech Republic) creates the most lively student city culture in Moravia.

💡 Tvářůžky cheese (Kč 30–50 per 100g; any Olomouc market; served with dark bread, butter, and Holba dark beer) is the definitive Olomouc meal. It smells significantly stronger than it tastes.

Eating & Drinking

Olomouc is the cheapest major Czech city for eating and the most specifically Moravian in its food culture. The tvarůžky (the Olomouc cheese at Kč 20–40; eaten on bread with butter and onion at the covered market on Ostružná ulice; the most defining single Olomouc food experience) and the Morava wine (the Moravian wine region to the south of Olomouc — the Véltlinské zelené and the Frankovka from the Slovácko and the Moravská Sbírka subregions; Kč 40–80 per glass at Olomouc wine bars; dramatically cheaper than the same wines in Prague) define the local table. The Moritz restaurant (the restored historic brewery; Nepůjčova 2; the most characterful restaurant in Olomouc; the Czech classics including the svíčková with house-brewed Moritz beer; Kč 150–300 pp; open daily) and the student cafes on Třída Míru (Kč 60–150 for lunch; the most affordable dining street in the city) give the mid-range and budget options respectively. The Haná cuisine (the traditional cooking of the Haná plain: the knedlíky, the svíčková and the Moravian wine vinegar-based sauces) distinguishes Olomouc from the more Bohemian food culture of Prague and Plzeň.

Getting Around

Olomouc is the most completely walkable major Czech city: the entire historic centre (the Upper Square, the Lower Square, the Wenceslas Cathedral, all six Baroque fountains, the Holy Trinity Column, the covered market and the Palacký University arts faculty) fits within a 1km diameter and requires no public transport for the visitor. The tram (Kč 20 single; tram #4 or #6 from Hlavní nádraží to the Korzo stop; 10 min; the most practical connection from the main train station to the Upper Square) is the only transit the first-time visitor needs. The Olomouc City Card (Kč 200 for 48h; unlimited trams and trolleybuses; museum entries including the Archdiocesan Museum and the Olomouc Museum of Art; the most cost-effective approach for a 2-night stay).
