Prague is the most beautiful medieval city in Central Europe — a 1.4-million-person capital whose Baroque and Gothic skyline survived the Second World War intact, preserved behind the Iron Curtain until 1989. The Charles Bridge (1357; 30 Baroque saints; the finest pedestrian bridge in Europe), the Old Town Square with the 1410 Astronomical Clock, and the Prague Castle (the largest castle complex in the world by area) together form a UNESCO historic centre that is the finest concentration of medieval and Baroque architecture in any capital on earth.

Prague is divided by the Vltava River — the Old Town and New Town on the east bank; Malá Strana (Lesser Town) and the Castle District on the west. The Josefov (the Jewish Quarter; six surviving synagogues and the finest Jewish cemetery in Central Europe) is in the north of the Old Town. A half-litre of Pilsner Urquell in a proper Czech pub costs less than a coffee — the Czech beer culture (the finest in the world; pilsner was invented in Bohemia in 1842 in Plzeň) is the third reason to be in Prague.

Top Sights in Prague

Old Town Square & Astronomical Clock

The Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) is the finest civic square in Central Europe — the 1410 Astronomical Clock on the Town Hall tower (the oldest functioning astronomical clock in the world; free to watch hourly; Kč 250 to climb), the Gothic twin towers of the Týn Church facing it, and the Baroque St Nicholas Church completing the ensemble.

💡 Charles Bridge before 7am (free; open 24h) — the morning mist on the Vltava, the lamp posts still lit, and fewer than 20 people on the 516m bridge. The finest free experience in Prague, unrecognisable from the daytime crowd.

Charles Bridge & Malá Strana

The Charles Bridge (Karlův most; built 1357–1402; 516m; 30 Baroque saints on the parapet) is the finest pedestrian bridge in Europe. Malá Strana (the Baroque neighbourhood on the west bank; the finest café district in Prague) has the Vrtba Garden (Kč 120; the finest Baroque terraced garden in the city) and the Kampa Island sculpture park.

💡 Prague Castle at 9am opening (the outer courtyard is free; the circuit ticket Kč 250 covers St Vitus, the Golden Lane, and St George’s Basilica) — the 30-minute head start before the 10:30am tour groups is the single most valuable Prague timing tip.

Prague Castle & St Vitus Cathedral

Prague Castle (Pražský Hrad; the largest castle complex in the world by area; 70,000m²; home to the Czech president) includes St Vitus Cathedral (the finest Gothic cathedral in Central Europe; the St Wenceslas Chapel with Bohemian precious stones; the Royal Crypt with the Czech kings). The castle overlooks the city from the west bank ridge.

💡 The Old Jewish Cemetery (Josefov; Kč 500 combined ticket; all 6 synagogues) is most atmospheric on a weekday morning — the 12 layers of tombstones erupting through the soil can be examined without a crowd pressing from behind.

Josefóv — The Jewish Quarter

Josefov (the Jewish Quarter; the medieval ghetto established in the 12th century; 6 surviving synagogues including the Old-New Synagogue (1270; the oldest functioning synagogue in Central Europe) and the Old Jewish Cemetery (100,000 burials in 12 layers). The Pinkas Synagogue walls are inscribed with 80,000 Czech Holocaust victims’ names.

💡 A Czech hospoda in Vinohrady or Malá Strana serves a half-litre of Pilsner Urquell for Kč 45–55. Beermat on top of your glass means “no more beer”; on the table means “keep them coming”.

Eating & Drinking

Prague has the most rapidly improving restaurant scene in Central Europe and the most underrated fine dining in the EU: the Czech cuisine (the svíčková na smetáně — the marinated beef sirloin in the cream sauce with the bread dumpling and the cranberry; the most important Czech national dish; Kč 200–350 at any traditional Czech restaurant — the hospoda; the roast pork knuckle — the pečené vepřové kolení; Kč 300–450; the goulash — the guláš; Kč 180–280; the bread dumplings — the chlebačky — as the Czech staple accompaniment to all meat dishes), the Prague craft beer scene (the Lokál chain — the most celebrated traditional Czech hospoda brand; the tank-conditioned Pilsner Urquell from the unfiltered tank; Kč 55–70 per 0.5L; the Lokal U Bileho lva on the Old Town; the Letka in Letná; the most specifically Czech pub experience in Prague), and the Michelin-starred fine dining (Field, Alcron, Maze Prague; Kč 1,500–3,000 pp for the tasting menu; the most affordable Michelin dining in the EU) give Prague a food range from the Kč 200 svíčková to the Kč 3,000 tasting menu within the same city.

Getting Around

The tram (Kč 30/30-min ticket; Kč 40/90-min; 3-day pass Kč 330; buy at the yellow machines at each stop; validate on the tram immediately; the most pleasant Prague transport) and the metro (3 lines; same ticket; the most efficient for longer distances) cover all tourist areas. Walking (the Old Town core is entirely walkable; the Charles Bridge to Prague Castle is a 25-min walk via Malá Strana). Bolt (the European ride-hailing app; Kč 100–250 for most central journeys; significantly cheaper and more reliable than street taxis; always use Bolt or Uber over the unlicensed street taxis at tourist sites). The airport bus (Kč 60; 35 min to Mustek) is the most economical airport connection.

Travel Tips

Charles Bridge at 5:30am: entirely empty

The Charles Bridge (free; open 24h) is at its finest before 7am when the morning mist sits on the Vltava, the lamp posts are still lit, and fewer than 20 people are on the bridge.

🍻

Czech pub: the Lokál chain for tank Pilsner

The Old Town Astronomical Clock (1410; free to watch hourly 9am–11pm; the mechanical figures perform on the hour) is most photogenic in the early morning light from the south side of the square.

📹

Vinohrady neighbourhood: the real Prague beyond the tourists

Prague Castle (the largest castle complex in the world by area; St Vitus Cathedral interior: free; castle circuit ticket: Kč 250) opens at 9am &mdash.

The Josefov Jewish Quarter (6-synagogue combined ticket: Kč 500; Sun–Fri 9am–6pm; closed Sat and Jewish holidays) has the Old Jewish Cemetery as its centrepiece &mdash.

Three Days in Prague

Day 1: Old Town and Josefóv. Day 2: Charles Bridge at dawn, Prague Castle. Day 3: Vinohrady, Municipal House, Wenceslas Square.

Day 1
Old Town Square, Josefóv & Pub Dinner

Charles Bridge at 6am (the mist; the lamp posts; 20 people). Old Town Square Astronomical Clock tower (9am; Kč 250). Josefov (Old Jewish Cemetery; Pinkas Synagogue; Kč 500). Týn Church evening.

💡 The Prague Metro 90-minute ticket (Kč 30) covers all three lines and any tram connection within the validity period — the Tram 22 from the centre to the castle and back is covered by one ticket.

Day 2
Charles Bridge at Dawn & Prague Castle

Prague Castle at 9am (the outer courtyard; St Vitus Cathedral; the Golden Lane; Kč 250). Malá Strana afternoon (Vrtba Garden; the café district; Kampa Island). Vinohrady for dinner.

💡 The Czech Crown (Kč) is not in the Euro zone — paying in EUR is always accepted at tourist sites but always at unfavourable rates. ATMs dispense Kč and are on every block in central Prague.

Day 3
Vinohrady, Municipal House & Wenceslas Square

Day trip to Kutná Hora (85km east; 1.5h by direct train; the Sedlec Ossuary Bone Church; the Cathedral of Saint Barbara; return by 6pm).

💡 Prague’s tourist circuit deserves 3 nights — the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, and the Castle can be done in a day but the Czech pub culture, the Josefov, and the Vinohrady neighbourhood all reward slower exploration.

What Does Prague Cost?

Prague is 40–60% cheaper than Paris or Amsterdam for equivalent quality. The draft Pilsner Urquell (Kč 60), the svíčková (Kč 280), and the 3-day tram pass (Kč 330) define the budget. Per person per day.
