Otavalo is a market town at 2,532m in the northern Andes of Ecuador, about two hours north of Quito. It is home to the Kichwa Otavalo people, famous for their weaving and trade, and its Plaza de los Ponchos is one of the best-known indigenous markets in South America: busiest on Saturdays, when stalls of textiles, hats, jewellery and crafts spill into the surrounding streets.

The town is surrounded by the volcanoes Imbabura, Cotacachi and Mojanda, and makes an excellent base for hikes to waterfalls and crater lakes, the leather town of Cotacachi and the Inti Raymi solstice festival in June.

The market runs every day, but on Saturdays it takes over much of the town, with weavings, alpaca blankets, tapestries, Panama hats and musical instruments. An animal market takes place on the edge of town early on Saturday mornings.

Bargaining is expected, politely; arrive early for the animal market.

Peguche Waterfall

A short trip from town, the Peguche waterfall drops through a eucalyptus forest that is sacred to the local Kichwa community, and a site of ritual bathing during Inti Raymi.

Laguna Cuicocha crater lake

Laguna Cuicocha

A deep crater lake with two forested islands at the foot of Cotacachi volcano, about 30 minutes’ drive away. A rim trail of about 14km circles the crater, with superb views; boat trips run on the lake.

Start the rim hike early, before clouds build.

Nearby Cotacachi is known for carne colorada, marinated beef.
