Kazbegi, officially Stepantsminda, is a small mountain town in the Greater Caucasus, about 157km north of Tbilisi and close to the Russian border. Above it, the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church stands on a ridge at about 2,170m, with 5,047m Mount Kazbek behind.

The drive there along the Georgian Military Highway is part of the experience, passing Ananuri fortress, the Gudauri ski area and the 2,395m Jvari Pass. In summer the area is Georgia’s most popular hiking base.
