Eger is the finest Baroque city in Hungary — a city of 55,000 in the Northern Hungarian hills, dominated by the Eger Castle (the site of the finest military episode in Hungarian history: the 1552 siege in which 2,000 Hungarian defenders led by István Dobó held the castle for 38 days against a 35,000-strong Ottoman army) and surrounded by the Bull’s Blood wine region (Egri Bikávér; the most famous wine in Hungary).

The Valley of Beautiful Women (Szépassány-völgy; 1km west; 40+ wine cellars cut into the volcanic tuff hillside; open from 11am) is the most convivial afternoon in Central Europe. The Egri Bikávér (“Bull’s Blood”; the blend of Kékfrankos, Kadarka, and other varieties) is the definitive Hungarian red wine. The Ottoman minaret at the edge of the Baroque town centre is the northernmost minaret in Europe.

The Castle of Eger & the 1552 Siege

The Eger Castle (Egri Vár; founded 10th century; Ft 2,200; the Bishop’s Palace, the casemate tunnels, and the Dobó István Castle Museum) was the site of the 1552 siege — 2,000 Hungarian defenders held the castle for 38 days against 35,000 Ottoman troops, the most celebrated military episode in Hungarian history.

💡 Eger Castle (Ft 2,200; opens 8am; the casemate tunnels; the Dobó museum) at 9am — before the school groups arrive. The underground tunnels from which the 1552 defenders fired are the finest military history experience in Hungary.

The Valley of Beautiful Women

The Szépassány-völgy (the Valley of Beautiful Women; 1km west; 40+ wine cellars in the volcanic tuff hillside; open from 11am; Ft 400–700 per glass) is the most convivial afternoon in Central Europe. The Egri Bikávér (Bull’s Blood; the most famous Hungarian red wine blend) is available from the producers at cellar prices — significantly below retail prices in Budapest.

💡 Valley of Beautiful Women (40+ cellars; 1km from the town; open from 11am; Ft 400–700 per glass) — visit 3–4 cellars then pick one for a bottle. The family producers in the back row have the finest Bikávér at the lowest prices.

The Baroque City Centre

The Eger Baroque city centre (the Dobó István tér with the 1568 Minorite Church; the Eger Basilica — the largest Neoclassical building in Hungary; the Lyceum building with the finest Baroque library in Hungary) is the finest Baroque and Neoclassical ensemble in a Hungarian provincial city.

💡 Ottoman minaret (Ft 500; 97 steps; open Apr–Oct 10am–6pm) — the northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe at the edge of a Baroque Catholic town centre. The finest view over the Eger skyline from the balcony.

💡 Dobó István tér at dusk (the finest Baroque square in Hungary; the 1568 Minorite Church; the churches lit from below) is the most atmospheric 30 minutes in Eger.

The Eger Thermal Bath & the Minaret

The Eger minaret (the northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe; 40m; 97 spiral steps; Ft 500; open Apr–Oct) and the Eger thermal bath (Ft 2,800; the 36°C outdoor pool; the finest thermal bath in northern Hungary) are the two Ottoman legacies that survived the reconquest of 1687.

Eating & Drinking

Eger cuisine is the most fully traditional Hungarian cooking available in a provincial city: the halászlé (the paprika fish soup; the essential Hungarian first course; the freshwater fish — the carp and the catfish — in the red paprika broth; Ft 2,500–4,000 / € 6.40–10 at any Eger Baroque café), the paprikás csirke (the chicken paprikash; the chicken thighs in the sweet red paprika and sour cream sauce; Ft 2,800–4,500 / € 7.20–11.50), and the Egri Bikaér (the Bull’s Blood; Ft 150–600 per decilitre at the Valley cellar door; Ft 2,000–5,000 for a bottle at the restaurant) define the Eger table. The Palacéta Restaurant (Do´bó István tér; the most formally presented Eger traditional cuisine; Ft 3,500–7,000 / € 9–18 pp main course) and the Valley of Beautiful Women cellar door are the two indispensable Eger food and drink experiences.
