The Szépassány-völgy (the Valley of Beautiful Women; 1km west; 40+ wine cellars in the volcanic tuff hillside; open from 11am; Ft 400–700 per glass) is the most convivial afternoon in Central Europe. The Egri Bikávér (Bull’s Blood; the most famous Hungarian red wine blend) is available from the producers at cellar prices — significantly below retail prices in Budapest.

The Eger Baroque city centre (the Dobó István tér with the 1568 Minorite Church; the Eger Basilica — the largest Neoclassical building in Hungary; the Lyceum building with the finest Baroque library in Hungary) is the finest Baroque and Neoclassical ensemble in a Hungarian provincial city.

Sep–Oct is the finest Eger season: the harvest; the new wine in the Valley; the vine-coloured hillside. May–Jun: warm and uncrowded. Jul–Aug: the castle is most animated but the Valley most crowded at weekends.
