Sopron is the finest medieval town in Hungary — a city of 62,000 on the Austrian border with the finest preserved inner city in Hungary (a 2km² oval of 13th to 17th-century buildings around the Roman foundation) and the most German-influenced architecture in the country. The Tűztorony (the Fire Tower; the finest medieval tower in Hungary; the symbol of the city; the panorama platform at 61m) stands at the entrance to the Fő tér main square.

Sopron chose Hungary over Austria in a 1921 plebiscite (the “most loyal city” of Hungary), preserving its identity as the finest Austro-Hungarian border town in the country. The Esterházy Palace at Fertőd (27km east; the “Hungarian Versailles”; the finest Baroque palace in Hungary; Joseph Haydn’s employer from 1761 to 1790) is the finest single day trip from Sopron.

Eating & Drinking

Sopron food culture is a Hungarian–Austrian hybrid reflecting the 60km proximity to Vienna: the Soproni Kékfrankos (the local red wine at every restaurant table; € 2.50–5 per glass; the most characterful and the most wine-specific single drink in western Hungary), the házi rétes (the home-made strudel — the most Austrian-influenced Sopron pastry; the apple, the cherry and the poppy seed varieties at every Sopron café; € 2–4 per slice), and the wild mushroom dishes from the Löver forest (the chanterelle and the porcini from the hills west of the city; the mushroom soup and the mushroom risotto at the inner city restaurants in September–October). The Gambrinus restaurant (Fő tér 3; the most atmospheric inner-city restaurant in Sopron; the medieval cellar; the Kékfrankos wine list; € 14–24 pp) and the Wollner Hotel restaurant (the finest dining in Sopron; the Löver wine selection; the Soproni duck breast; € 20–35 pp) represent the Sopron mid-to-upper restaurant tier.
