The canyon’s showpiece is a two-kilometre corridor of towering red rock pinnacles resembling turrets and battlements, best walked from the rim down to the river and back.
💡 Start early to hike in the cool and catch the low golden light.
At the bottom of the valley the fast green Charyn River threads between the cliffs, a refreshing contrast to the arid rock and a lovely spot to rest before the climb out.
💡 There is a small cafe and camp by the river at the trail’s end.
A separate section of the canyon shelters a rare grove of Sogdian ash trees that have survived since the Ice Age, a green oasis found almost nowhere else on earth.
💡 It is a short drive from the Valley of Castles; ask your tour to include it.
Along the top of the gorge, marked viewpoints reveal the full sweep of the red rock labyrinth and the plateau stretching to the Tian Shan on the horizon.

Simple yurt and cabin camps near the canyon let you stay overnight for sunrise light on the rocks and some of the darkest, most star-filled skies in the region.

Dining at the canyon is simple: the cafe and yurt camps near the Valley of Castles serve tea, plov, laghman, shashlik and hearty soups to fuel the hike. Most day-trippers bring a picnic and plenty of water, as there are few options once you leave the main entrance. Evenings at the camps often feature a communal meal under the stars.
Leave Almaty early for the three-hour drive, then hike down through the Valley of Castles to the Charyn River.
Rest by the river, climb back to the rim viewpoints, and visit the relict ash grove before the drive back.
Extend into an overnight at a yurt camp for sunrise on the rocks and combine with the Kolsai Lakes the next day.
There is no public transport; join a day tour from Almaty or hire a private car and driver.
The canyon is hot and exposed with little shade; bring at least two litres per person.
If you stay over, temperatures drop sharply after dark even in summer.
The trail down to the river is loose and rocky; sturdy footwear helps.
