Best Time to VisitApril to October

Barely half an hour from central Skopje, the city falls away and the Treska river carves a green-walled gorge that feels a hundred miles from anywhere. Matka Canyon is North Macedonia’s favourite escape — a dramatic cleft of limestone cliffs, a jade reservoir, medieval monasteries clinging to the slopes, and some of the deepest underwater caves in the world hidden beneath the surface.

It is an easy half-day that punches far above its size. You can paddle a kayak beneath the cliffs, take a boat to the Vrelo Cave, hike the cliffside path between monasteries, or simply eat lunch on the terrace where the canyon narrows and the water glows. Matka means ‘womb’ in Macedonian — a fitting name for a place this sheltered and this alive — and it is the single best reason to keep a spare afternoon when you visit Skopje.

Top Sights at Matka

The Boat to Vrelo Cave

The Boat to Vrelo Cave

A short boat ride up the emerald reservoir reaches Vrelo, one of the deepest underwater caves on earth, its chamber hung with stalactites above still water.

💡 Boats leave from the dam when they fill up — go early to avoid the wait.

Kayaking the Canyon

Kayaking the Canyon

Rent a kayak at the dam and paddle beneath the cliffs at your own pace — the calmest, most beautiful way to feel the scale of the gorge.

💡 The water is flat and easy; no experience needed.

The Cliffside Trail

The Cliffside Trail

A path pinned to the canyon wall runs from the dam past the monastery to viewpoints over the jade water — the classic Matka walk.

💡 Wear proper shoes; the trail is narrow and rocky in places.

St Andrew’s Monastery

St Andrew’s Monastery

A tiny 14th-century monastery beside the water at the canyon mouth, with medieval frescoes — the start of the trail and a serene first stop.

💡 It sits right by the restaurant terrace — combine with lunch.

The Reservoir & Terrace

The Reservoir & Terrace

The still green lake behind the dam, ringed by cliffs, with a restaurant terrace hanging over the water — the postcard heart of Matka.

💡 Time a late lunch here when the afternoon light hits the gorge.

Eating & Drinking

Matka has one perfect spot to eat: the Canyon Matka restaurant terrace, cantilevered over the water where the gorge narrows. It serves Macedonian classics — grilled trout from the river, shopska salad, grilled meats and cold Skopsko beer — with a view that does most of the work. There is a smaller cafe by the dam for coffee and snacks before a paddle. Otherwise, this is a nature stop rather than a dining destination: bring water for the trail, and save your appetite for the terrace or for dinner back in Skopje afterward.

Getting Around

Matka is about 30 minutes west of central Skopje — the easiest way there is a taxi (cheap and quick) or an organised half-day tour; a city bus runs partway but is slow and infrequent. Once at the dam, everything is on foot or water: the boats, kayak rental, the trail and the monastery all cluster around the canyon mouth. There is no need for a car beyond getting there. Arrange a return taxi pickup or keep a driver’s number, as ride options thin out at the canyon itself.

Travel Tips

🚕

Arrange your return

Taxis thin out at the canyon — book a return pickup or keep a driver’s number to avoid a long wait.

Go early

The boats and kayaks are busiest midday in summer; an early start means shorter waits and cooler walking.

🚶

Wear real shoes

The cliffside trail is narrow and rocky — trainers or boots, not sandals.

📷

Half a day is enough

Matka pairs perfectly with a Skopje trip — a morning or afternoon covers the boat, a walk and lunch.
