Ohrid is a lakeside town of about 39,000 people in south-western North Macedonia, on the shore of Lake Ohrid. Known in antiquity as Lychnidos, it became a major centre of Slavic Christianity and learning in the Middle Ages, and legend says it once had 365 churches. The town and lake are a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both their culture and nature, extended to the Albanian side of the lake in 2019.

Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, up to 288 metres deep, and is home to more than 200 species found nowhere else. The old town’s cobbled lanes climb from the harbour past Byzantine churches to Samuel’s Fortress, while beaches and monasteries line the shore to the south.

Top Sights in Ohrid

Church of St John at Kaneo above Lake Ohrid

Church of St John at Kaneo

This small 13th-century church stands on a rocky headland above the lake and is the town’s best-known image. A cliffside walkway and footpaths lead to it from the old town and the beach below.

Visit at sunset, or take a small boat from the harbour for the view from the water.

Walls of Samuel's Fortress in Ohrid

Samuel’s Fortress

The walls of this fortress crown the hill above the old town, named after Tsar Samuel, who ruled from Ohrid around the turn of the 11th century. You can walk the ramparts for wide views over the roofs and the lake.

Combine with the walk down through the woods to Plaošnik and Kaneo.

Early Christian floor mosaics at Plaošnik, Ohrid

Plaošnik

This hillside site holds the rebuilt Church of St Clement and Panteleimon, linked with Clement of Ohrid, one of the founders of Slavic literacy, alongside the remains of early Christian basilicas with fine floor mosaics.

Look for the mosaics under protective shelters beside the church.

The ancient theatre of Ohrid

Ancient Theatre & St Sophia

The Hellenistic theatre in the upper old town, built around 200 BC, is used again for performances during the Ohrid Summer Festival in July and August. Nearby, the Church of St Sophia is one of the largest medieval churches in the country, known for its frescoes.

Check the festival programme for evening concerts in the theatre.

St Naum Monastery on Lake Ohrid

St Naum Monastery

At the southern end of the lake near the Albanian border, this monastery was founded by Saint Naum in the early 10th century. Next to it, springs fed underground from Lake Prespa form clear pools that you can explore by rowing boat.

Get there by bus, taxi or a summer boat from Ohrid harbour.

Eating & Drinking

Try tavče gravče (baked beans), ajvar (roasted pepper relish), šopska salad, grilled meats and lake fish. Ohrid trout is protected because of overfishing, so ask what is actually on the menu; farmed trout and other lake fish are common alternatives.

The old town and the lakefront promenade have plenty of restaurants and cafés; Macedonian wines from the Tikveš region are good value.

Getting There & Around

St Paul the Apostle Airport, just north of town, has flights mostly in summer. Buses connect Ohrid with Skopje in about 3 hours and with Struga, Bitola and Tirana in Albania.

The old town is best explored on foot. Local buses, taxis and summer boats run along the lake to beaches and St Naum, and Galičica National Park rises behind the eastern shore.
