The village church was flooded when the reservoir was created in the mid-20th century. Depending on the water level, its roof and belfry rise above the lake, or in dry periods you can walk right up to it.
Low water in late summer and autumn often exposes more of the church.

Up to 10km long and 50m deep, the lake is used for swimming, boating and trout fishing in summer, ringed by meadows and forest.

In the Radika valley, the Monastery of St John the Baptist is known for its intricately carved wooden iconostasis.

Mountain food includes lamb, local cheeses, tavče gravče (baked beans), trout from the lake and rivers, and homemade breads and jams.
Hotels and guesthouses around the lake serve hearty traditional meals.
Mavrovo is less than 100km from Skopje, around one and a half hours by car. Buses run between Skopje, Gostivar and Debar, passing near the park. Skopje Airport is the nearest international airport.
A car is the easiest way to reach the church, villages and monasteries.
