Zakopane is a mountain town of about 27,000 people at 800–1,100m, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains near the Slovak border. Called the “winter capital of Poland”, it attracts millions of visitors a year for skiing in winter and hiking in Tatra National Park in summer.

The town is the heart of Goral (highlander) culture, with its own dialect, music, dress and food, and is known for the Zakopane style of wooden architecture created by Stanisław Witkiewicz in the late 19th century. Its main street, Krupówki, is busy year-round.

Top Sights in Zakopane

Morskie Oko lake in the Tatra Mountains

Morskie Oko

The largest lake in the Tatras sits below granite peaks. From the car park at Palenica Białczańska, a paved road of about 9km leads to the lake; most people walk, and horse-drawn carts cover much of the way. From the lake, a steeper path climbs to Czarny Staw.

Go early to avoid crowds; parking must often be booked online.

Kasprowy Wierch in the Tatras

Kasprowy Wierch

A cable car, first built in 1936, climbs from Kuźnice to the 1,987m summit on the Polish–Slovak border. In winter it serves ski runs; in summer it is a starting point for ridge hikes.

Buy tickets online; queues are long in season.

Gubałówka hill above Zakopane

Gubałówka

A funicular, opened in 1938, runs from the town centre up this hill opposite the Tatras, with panoramic views, stalls and a toboggan run.

Krupówki Street

The main pedestrian street is lined with restaurants, shops and stalls selling oscypek cheese and souvenirs. It is lively day and night.

Villa Koliba in Zakopane

Zakopane style villas

Villa Koliba (1892–93), the first building in the Zakopane style, now houses a museum of the style. Nearby, the old wooden church and cemetery on Pęksowy Brzyzek are also worth seeing.

Giewont mountain above Zakopane

Giewont

The distinctive “Sleeping Knight” mountain, topped by an iron cross, dominates the skyline. The final section to the summit uses chains and should be avoided in storms.

Leave the summit before afternoon thunderstorms in summer.

Eating & Drinking

Goral food is hearty: try oscypek (smoked sheep’s cheese, often grilled with cranberry), kwaśnica (sauerkraut soup), pierogi, potato pancakes and grilled meats in a traditional karczma (inn).

Krupówki is full of restaurants; quieter places are in the side streets.

Getting There & Around

Buses and minibuses from Kraków take around two hours, and trains are also available. The nearest airport is Kraków. Traffic can be heavy on the road in high season.

Local buses and minibuses run to trailheads such as Kuźnice and Palenica Białczańska.

🛂 Entry rules: EES and ETIAS

Poland is in the Schengen area, which has two EU border systems for non-EU visitors.

EES (in force): since 10 April 2026 the EU’s Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors’ passport details, fingerprints and a photo the first time they enter the Schengen area, replacing passport stamps. Allow extra time at the border on your first trip; later crossings are quicker. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are not registered.

ETIAS (not yet running): a €20 online travel authorisation for visitors who don’t need a visa, such as UK, US, Canadian and Australian citizens. It hasn’t started and no start date has been confirmed, so nobody can apply yet; ignore websites that offer to “pre-register” you for a fee.

Visa-free visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, not per country.
