My Khe Beach — 10km of sand directly fronting the Da Nang coastline — was rated one of the world’s finest beaches by Forbes in 2011. The Truong Son mountains rise behind the southern end; the Son Tra Peninsula closes the northern horizon. Lifeguards operate from 6am to 9pm in season.
💡 My Khe Beach is best before 7am when the Vietnamese morning swimmers have the water — the rising sun over the Marble Mountains and the empty sand make the finest hour of the Da Nang day.
The Marble Mountains are five limestone outcrops 8km south of Da Nang, each named after one of the five elements. The largest, Thuy Son (Water Mountain), has the finest cave temples — Non Nuoc Cave and Huyen Khong Cave — and a summit viewpoint overlooking the coastline all the way to Hoi An.
💡 The Marble Mountains elevator runs to the summit of Thuy Son (₫15,000 one-way) — take it up and use the stone staircase down through the cave temples for the finest descent.
Son Tra Peninsula rises 693m from the sea on the northern edge of Da Nang — a nature reserve with the last wild forest in the city. The 67-metre Lady Buddha at Linh Ung Pagoda is visible from across the bay; the red-shanked douc langurs live in the forest below the pagoda boundary.
💡 Son Tra Peninsula’s douc langurs are most reliably seen near the Linh Ung Pagoda boundary before 5:30am — bring binoculars and go by scooter. The monkeys come down to the forest edge near the road at dawn.
Ba Na Hills (1,487m; 25km west) has the Golden Bridge — two gigantic stone hands holding a 150m golden walkway above the mountain mist — as its centrepiece. The French village at the summit and the alpine flower garden make it the most surreal complex in Vietnam.
💡 Ba Na Hills tickets are cheapest bought online 48 hours ahead (₫990,000). The Golden Bridge is best in the morning before the cloud cover lifts — the mist is the intended visual effect.
Da Nang’s food culture is the least specifically local of the central Vietnamese cities (overshadowed by Hue’s imperial cuisine and Hoi An’s Ancient Town restaurants) but has its own register: the mỳ Quảng (the turmeric-tinted noodle soup; the Quang Nam province specialty shared with Hoi An; a small amount of rich broth with prawn, pork and herbs over wide rice noodles; the correct Da Nang lunch; VND 30,000–50,000), the bánh trang cuốn (the Da Nang rice paper roll; the steamed rice paper rolled around pork and mushroom; eaten with the Quang Nam dipping sauce; VND 25,000–40,000), and the fresh seafood of the My Khe Beach strip (the grilled squid and the clams; the seafood restaurants along Pham Van Dong Street parallel to the beach; the most concentrated seafood restaurant strip in central Vietnam; VND 200,000–500,000 for a full seafood dinner for two). The Korean restaurant cluster around Tran Phu Street (the Korean expat community; the most authentic Korean food in Vietnam outside Hanoi; the BBQ and the kimchi jjigae) is the unexpected Da Nang food highlight.
Grab (GrabBike VND 15,000–50,000; GrabCar VND 40,000–100,000) covers the city efficiently: the DAD Airport to My Khe Beach (VND 50,000–80,000; 10 min), the beach hotel to the Marble Mountains (VND 50,000; 15 min), the city to the Son Tra Linh Ung Pagoda (VND 60,000–80,000; 15 min). Rental motorbike (VND 100,000–150,000/day from the beach hotels) is the best option for the Son Tra Peninsula circuit (20km; 1.5h; the winding forest road to the Linh Ung Pagoda; the douc langur spotting stops) and for the Marble Mountains–Hoi An southern run. The Hoi An day trip (30km south; 40 min) is most convenient by Grab (VND 150,000 one way) or the Da Nang–Hoi An local bus (Bus 1; VND 30,000; 60 min from the Da Nang bus terminal).
The Dragon Bridge breathes fire on Saturday and Sunday nights at 9pm — free to watch from the Han River bank on either side.

My Khe Beach at 5:30am — the Vietnamese sunrise swimming hour — has hundreds of locals in the water before the heat arrives.
Mar–Aug is the dry beach season (26–34°C; the sea calm and clear; May–Jul is the finest window). Sep–Dec is the rainy and typhoon season (rough sea; swimming inadvisable). Jan–Feb is transitional — cooler but often dry and pleasant.

💡 The Dragon Bridge fire show runs Saturday and Sunday at exactly 9pm — position yourself on the My An bank (east side) looking north 20 minutes early for the unobstructed view of the dragon’s head.

💡 The Hai Van Pass is best ridden northbound (Da Nang to Hue direction) — the sea view is on your left the entire ascent. The summit lookout has military-era bunkers from the American War still intact.

💡 Ba Na Hills in the morning mist is the intended experience — the Golden Bridge hands emerging from the cloud is the design intention. Clear blue-sky days reveal the artifice; the mist makes it magical.
Da Nang is the most mid-range of the central Vietnamese cities — the beach hotel strip pushes accommodation higher than Hue or Hoi An. The Ba Na Hills day (VND 750,000–900,000 entry alone) is the main single-day spend. Per person per day.
The Son Tra Peninsula motorbike circuit (VND 120,000/day hire; free entry to Linh Ung Pagoda), the Marble Mountains (₫40,000), the Hoi An day trip by bus (VND 60,000 return) and the Pham Van Dong seafood dinner (VND 150,000) give.
The Ba Na Hills day (VND 750,000–900,000 pp including the cable car; the Golden Bridge; the French Village) is the main mid-range spend in Da Nang and is worth it for the Golden Bridge photography alone in clear weather.
