The CBD is entirely walkable: the Rundle Mall (the pedestrian shopping mall, the heart of the retail district), the North Terrace cultural boulevard (the State Library, the Museum, the Art Gallery, the University of Adelaide all in a row), the Central Market (Gouger Street) and the Botanic Garden are all within a 15-minute walk. The free tram runs through the CBD from Hindley Street to the Entertainment Centre and to Glenelg (A$5 with MetroCard; 30 min). Feb–Apr is the festival and wine harvest season — the finest time: warm (20–28°C), the Fringe, WOMADelaide and Tasting Australia all run. Sep–Nov (spring) is also excellent. Jan–Feb can have severe heat waves (38–44°C).

The Adelaide Festival and Fringe (both February–March) run simultaneously. The Fringe is the largest arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere and is overwhelmingly free to attend.

Rex Airlines from Adelaide to Kangaroo Island (AU$120; 35 min) is faster than driving to the ferry. Sealink Ferry back (AU$83; 45 min; Cape Jervis) avoids driving the same road twice.
Adelaide regularly hits 40°C+ in January. Hydrate aggressively and take any outdoor sightseeing before 10am and after 5pm. The heat is genuinely dangerous for extended exposure.
Hahndorf (28km from Adelaide; 30 min) was settled by Lutheran refugees in 1839. The Hahndorf Inn serves proper schnitzel; the Adelaide Hills wine region surrounds the village.
