A scooter (₹300–500/day; available from any beach shop or guesthouse in North or South Goa; the practical daily transport between beaches, markets, Old Goa and the spice plantations; helmets are mandatory and available with the scooter; petrol stations every 10–15km on the main NH66 highway) is the single most liberating transport choice in Goa. The NH66 highway runs the length of the state from north to south and is well-maintained; the beach-access roads are narrower but passable. Uber is available and practical from the airport and for longer journeys. Auto-rickshaws are available at most beach towns but charge tourist rates (₹200–500 for short journeys that a scooter would cover in ₹20 of fuel). The Konkan Railway (the mainline south from Mumbai; the most scenic railway journey on the west coast; the Mandovi River and the Sharavathi River bridges) serves Goa at Thivim (North Goa), Karmali (near Panaji) and Canacona (South Goa; for Palolem and Agonda).
Nov–Mar is the season (25–32°C; dry; sea calm; beach shacks open). Dec–Jan is peak (Christmas–New Year; highest prices; book months ahead). Oct is the hidden gem: post-monsoon lushness, empty beaches, best prices. Jun–Sep monsoon: most shacks closed; extraordinary green landscape; surfers love it.
Goa ranges from backpacker-cheap (₹500/night beach hut; ₹100 fish curry rice) to luxury-expensive (₹20,000+/night five-star resort). Scooter hire (₹350/day) is the most cost-efficient transport. Alcohol is India’s cheapest in Goa. Per person per day.

The Goa Konkan Railway (Mumbai to Palolem in 9h; ₹1,200–2,500 AC chair car; the most scenic coastal train journey in India) is the finest way to arrive in South Goa and is itself a travel experience worth the price.

Palolem’s crescent bay and calm water is the most beautiful beach in Goa. 2 hours south of Panaji by bus. Arrive before 10am.
The Portuguese Baroque churches (Sé Cathedral, Basilica of Bom Jesus) are finest on a quiet weekday morning before organised tours arrive from Panaji.
Morjim in North Goa is an Olive Ridley turtle nesting site (Nov–Feb) with noticeably cleaner water and sand than Calangute or Baga.
The waterfall is fullest June–September but often inaccessible due to road closures. Best window is April–May when water still flows and roads are open.
