Esztergom is not a significant food destination — the city’s restaurant scene is modest relative to its historical importance. The Padány restaurant (Bajcsy-Zsilinszky utca 1; the most reliable traditional Hungarian cuisine in Esztergom; the gulyás (beef goulash) soup; the paprikás csirke (chicken paprikash); € 8–16 pp), the Csülkös Kor csma (the Castle Hill beer terrace; the panoramic Danube view table; the fried hídvégi sausage; € 6–12 pp), and the Štúrovo restaurant on the Slovak side of the Maria Valéria Bridge (the Basilica view from the Slovak bank table; the Slovak-Hungarian border cuisine; € 8–15 pp at Slovak prices, which are lower than the Hungarian bank) are the practical choices. The Bakócz Chapel (red Esztergom marble; Renaissance; 1507; free inside the Basilica; accessible from the south aisle) is the finest Renaissance interior in Hungary. Allow 20 minutes beyond the main nave visit.
