Echo Beach has the finest surf in Canggu — a beach break that works on south and southwest swells at all tide levels. The rights break at the northern end is the most consistent; the beach warungs on the southern end have the finest viewpoint for watching the local surfers at dawn.

The rice paddies of Canggu are the finest still-living example of Bali’s agricultural landscape within the tourist corridor — the subak irrigation channels running between villa walls and café terraces, the duck herders in the morning, and the working farmers alongside the co-working spaces.
💡 Canggu’s Sunday market is best before 10am when the produce is fresh and the vendors are still setting up — vintage clothing and handmade jewellery are both best approached early.
La Brisa is the finest beach club in Canggu — a bamboo pavilion above the beach with Indonesian food sourced from the island, cocktails designed around local spirits, and a Friday night live music programme. FINNS, 500m north, is the largest beach club in Bali and the most reliably boisterous.

Canggu has more specialty coffee shops per square kilometre than any city in Southeast Asia outside Singapore — the Batu Bolong strip alone has 20 cafes within 500m. The co-working spaces (Dojo, Outpost) have fast fibre and the digital nomad community that has made this the largest remote-work hub in the region.

Canggu has a more democratic food culture than Seminyak: the local warungs (the nasi campur IDR 20,000–30,000 at the Pasar Canggu traditional market and the side streets behind the cafe strip) coexist with the international breakfast bowls (the acai bowl; the smoothie bowl; the avocado toast; IDR 60,000–120,000; the Old Man’s or Crate Cafe for the most reliable), the beachside grilled seafood (the fish and squid from the Canggu fishing boats; grilled at the beach warungs near Echo Beach; IDR 40,000–80,000 for a fresh grilled fish), and the cocktail bar scene (the Old Man’s terrace for the sunset beer; IDR 40,000–80,000 for a Bintang; the Deus for the evening negroni; the Pretty Poison for the natural wine). The Canggu Sunday market (the weekly artisan market at Deus or at FINNS; local producers; the fresh juice; the artisan bread; the silver jewellery; the batik) is the finest weekly market in southern Bali.
A scooter (IDR 60,000–80,000/day from any hotel or rental shop on Jalan Batu Bolong; the essential Canggu vehicle) is the only way to fully explore the rice paddy lanes and the village temples of inner Canggu — the internal paths are not accessible by car. Gojek and Grab operate throughout Canggu for those who prefer not to ride (IDR 15,000–30,000 for cafe-to-beach journeys; IDR 80,000–120,000 to the airport). The Jalan Batu Bolong central strip (the main cafe and restaurant road) is walkable in the morning before the traffic builds; the beach is a 5-min scooter or 15-min walk from most central Canggu accommodation.

Apr–Oct is the dry season (28–32°C; the best surf; the offshore morning wind). May–Jul is the prime surf window. Jul–Aug is peak (busy; expensive; book accommodation 2+ months ahead). Nov–Mar: onshore winds; messier surf; greener paddies; lower prices.

💡 Tanah Lot temple at sunset (18km south) is best reached by scooter in 25 minutes — the car park fills from 4:30pm and the best viewing angle is the promontory to the left of the main viewpoint.

💡 Canggu to Ubud takes 45 minutes by Gojek car (Rp 120,000) — Tegalalang rice terraces, the Monkey Forest, and back by 5pm for the Canggu sunset.
Canggu is more affordable than Seminyak for accommodation but the cafe culture pushes food costs higher than Ubud. The specialty flat white (IDR 35,000), the beach club minimum (IDR 150,000–300,000) and the surf lesson (IDR 200,000) are the defining daily costs. Per person per day.
The rice paddy lane scooter ride (free; scooter IDR 70,000/day), the Old Man’s beach break (public; board hire IDR 50,000/h), the Pura Batu Bolong sunset (free), and the warung nasi campur (IDR 25,000) give the complete Canggu experience.
The Deus Ex Machina evening (the most complete Canggu experience — the vintage motorcycles, the flat white, the gallery, the dinner and the negroni at the bar; IDR 200,000–400,000 including food and drink) is the best.
