The 5,000-year-old stone circle on Salisbury Plain: mysterious, undeniably powerful and best seen at dawn or sunset. Salisbury Cathedral’s spire (123m) is visible 30 miles away.

Mount Snowdon (1,085m, Wales’s highest peak), the Llanberis Pass and the Harlech Castle above the Cardigan Bay coast: the finest mountain landscape in England and Wales.
A Georgian city built on Roman foundations: the 2,000-year-old Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge above the River Avon. The most architecturally unified city in England.
Fresh cod or haddock in batter, with hand-cut chips, salt, vinegar and mushy peas. Best eaten from the paper on a cold seaside promenade. The Randolph Filey in Yorkshire and Magpie Cafe in Whitby are the benchmarks.

The British gin renaissance has produced hundreds of small distilleries. Hendricks, Tanqueray and Plymouth Gin are the classics; local gins are found in every decent pub.

May to September is the best window — longer days, warmer temperatures, outdoor life. June and July have the most reliable weather. December brings the Christmas atmosphere that London does particularly well.
London is among Europe’s most expensive cities. Outside London — Edinburgh, the countryside, smaller cities — costs drop significantly. The free museums are one of London’s great advantages.
The Wetherspoon pub chain serves hot meals from £5–8 and a pint from £2.50 — not glamorous, but perfectly reasonable for a budget lunch.
A West End theatre ticket costs £30–80. The TKTS booth in Leicester Square sells same-day tickets at up to 50% off — worth checking for major productions.
London has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other UK city. The Ledbury, Sketch and The Fat Duck (Bray) are among the finest tasting menu experiences in Europe.

💡 Book the Tower of London online — the Crown Jewels queue can be 90 minutes. The White Tower is the oldest Norman keep in England.
Train to Moreton-in-Marsh (90 min from Paddington) then bus or taxi through the Cotswolds — Chipping Campden, Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford. The honey-stone villages are the England of imagination.

Train or hire car: the Lake District (Windermere, Grasmere) or the Yorkshire Dales (Malham Cove, Aysgarth Falls). Both are within 2–3 hours of Edinburgh or London.
💡 Blea Tarn in the Lake District at dawn, before the car parks fill, is one of the quietest and most beautiful spots in England.
The rail network connects every major UK city. Advance tickets are significantly cheaper than same-day fares.
London restaurant: GBP 20-40 per person. A Yorkshire pub meal: GBP 10-15. Accommodation follows the same pattern.
