Fiji is an archipelago of 333 islands in the South Pacific, the most developed tourism destination in the Pacific Islands and one of the world’s great dive destinations. The Mamanuca Islands (of Survivor fame) and the Yasawa Islands chain are the classic Fijian resort experience; the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu has the Rainbow Reef, consistently rated the world’s finest soft coral dive site; and the interior of Viti Levu has highland villages, waterfalls and kava ceremonies.

Fijian culture is built on bula (the greeting that means hello, welcome, good health) and ibe (mat weaving), yaqona (kava) ceremonies and meke (traditional song and dance). The warmth is genuine: Fiji has won the “Friendliest Country” award more times than any other Pacific nation. The Fijian cuisine of lovo (earth oven), kokoda (raw fish in coconut milk) and palusami (taro leaves in coconut cream) is among the Pacific’s finest.

Kokoda (Fijian Ceviche)

Raw fish (usually wahoo or mahi-mahi) cured in citrus juice with coconut cream, chilli, onion and cucumber: the definitive Fijian appetiser, served in a coconut shell.

🍽
Lovo Feast

A traditional earth oven: pork, chicken, fish and taro wrapped in banana leaves and cooked over hot stones in a pit. Prepared for celebrations and village feast days.

Best Time to Visit Fiji

May to October is the dry season — the best time for diving, sailing the Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains, and the Coral Coast. July and August are peak season. November to April is the wet season with tropical rains and occasional cyclones (January–March highest risk), but also uncrowded resorts and significantly lower prices.

One Week in Fiji

Nadi and the coral coast for two days, the Mamanuca Islands for two, the Yasawa Islands for two, diving the Great Astrolabe Reef for one. Fiji is 333 islands across 1.3 million km² of Pacific Ocean — the world’s finest soft-coral diving and the warmest hospitality in the Pacific.

Day 1Nadi & Viti Levu
Arrive: the main island & the highlands

Nadi (pronounced “Nandi”, the third-largest town, home to the main international airport) and the Sabeto Hot Springs and Mud Pools (natural volcanic thermal pools in the Nadi highlands, entirely free). The Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple (the largest Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere, 1994, vivid gopuram tower, Fiji’s Indian-Fijian community).

💡 Fiji’s Indian-Fijian community (37% of the population) descended from indentured labourers brought by the British from India between 1879 and 1916 to work sugarcane plantations. The community has maintained a distinct Hindu and Muslim culture for 140 years.

Day 2Coral Coast
Drive south: the village reef

2h30 from Nadi on the Coral Coast (Queen’s Highway, Viti Levu’s southern coast). The Pacific Harbour Arts Village (the finest display of traditional Fijian culture, including the bure (thatched house), firewalking demonstrations on heated volcanic stones — a tradition of the Sawau tribe on Beqa Island) and the Kula Wild Life Park.

💡 Fijian firewalking (vilavilairevo, “jumping into the oven”) is practised by the Sawau people of Beqa Island — walking barefoot over heated volcanic stones at 300–900°C. The spiritual preparation (taboo on sex, coconut and women for one week before) is taken seriously by practitioners.

Day 3Mamanuca Islands
Speedboat west: the resort archipelago

30–45 min speedboat from Port Denarau. The Mamanuca Islands — a chain of 20 volcanic islands and coral cays 20–45 minutes from Nadi by speedboat, with the finest shallow-water snorkelling in Fiji — are the archetypal Pacific island experience. Cloud 9 (a floating pontoon bar above a coral garden) for the day.

💡 The Mamanuca Islands are where Castaway (2000) and the first two Survivor series were filmed. Monuriki Island (the deserted island in Castaway) can be visited on day trips from Mana or Malolo Lailai.

Day 4Mamanuca diving
The soft coral capital of the world

Fiji is described by Jacques Cousteau as “the soft coral capital of the world.” The Great White Wall (Rainbow Reef, Taveuni, 30m depth, an entire wall covered in white soft coral — actually branching staghorn coral bleached white) and the local Mamanuca reef dives — lionfish, reef sharks, turtles and extraordinary coral cover even at 5m depth.

💡 Fijian soft coral reefs have been damaged by bleaching events (2000, 2016, 2020) but remain significantly more intact than most Indo-Pacific reefs. The deeper walls (20–35m) have escaped the worst bleaching and still have the coral density that earned Fiji its reputation.

Day 5Yasawa Islands
Sail or fast-cat north: the remote chain

3h–5h by Yasawa Flyer catamaran from Port Denarau. The Yasawa Islands — a 90km chain of volcanic islands with no road access, no cars, freshwater-fed caves (Sawa-i-Lau caves, limestone caverns with an inner chamber accessible only by diving underwater) and beaches that see perhaps 20 visitors a day in shoulder season.

💡 Sawa-i-Lau limestone caves are reached by a 5-min swim through an underwater passage at 1.5m depth. The inner chamber above water has ancient Fijian petroglyphs on the walls. The outer cave is the location where Blue Lagoon (1980) and its sequel were filmed.

Day 6Yasawa
Village visits & kava ceremony

Traditional village visits with a kava ceremony (the central ritual of Fijian social life — ground yangona root mixed with water in a wooden tanoa bowl, drunk from a halved coconut shell, with specific formalities: “Bula!”, clap once, drain the bilo, clap three times). Snorkelling directly from the beach over the house reef.

💡 Kava (yaqona) is mildly sedating, slightly numbing on the tongue, and tastes of muddy water. The ceremony is genuine social ritual — village elders present kava to visiting chiefs (or tourists) to establish peaceful relations. It is considered rude to refuse.

Day 7Nadi departure
Return & last morning at the beach

Yasawa Flyer or seaplane back to Nadi. A final morning at the Denarau resort beach or Wailoaloa Beach (the affordable “backpacker beach” 5 min from Nadi) before Nadi International (NAN) for Pacific connections.

💡 The Fiji Airways seaplane (Turtle Airways) between the Yasawas and Nadi (45 min) costs FJ$350–500 one-way but provides the finest aerial view of the archipelago — the lagoon colours from above are extraordinary.
